Cruise passengers briefly visiting Honolulu Cruise Port may be interested in some of the many excursions and day activities available. Milder temperatures and minimal rainfall make this an ideal time to explore the island’s natural beauty. It is also when most of Hawaii’s famed flora blooms, making it the perfect time of year to hike, see the sights, and take photographs. Directions are straightforward for traveling to the port from parts of the city other than the airport. Major arteries, like Nimitz Highway and Ala Moana Boulevard, have clear signage that directs travelers to the Honolulu Port.

There are a few options for cruisers to get from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport to the Port of Honolulu, including public transportation, rental cars and more. However, unlike Aloha Tower Terminal which is located in downtown Honolulu with plenty of options for shopping and dining nearby, Pier 2 has limited options within its vicinity. The Pier 2 Terminal is another option for cruise passengers arriving in Honolulu.
The cost of riding the bus is significantly cheaper than other transport options, such as taxis or shuttles. Passengers can purchase a one-way ticket or opt for an all-day pass that allows them unlimited rides on any bus route. In addition to Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Princess Cruises, there are several other cruise lines that visit Honolulu.
For those who prefer public transportation, there are bus routes that stop near the port entrance. The city’s bus system is called “TheBus,” and visitors can take Route #19 (Waikiki Beach & Hotels) or Route #20 (Airport-Pearlridge) to get to the port. If you’re short on time, we recommend trying a few local sample dishes available from street food vendors. They are easy to spot as they wear Aloha shirts (keep in mind that they do work for tips). Port Honolulu cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month.
It is situated near the airport, making it a convenient location for those who want to go straight from their flight to their ship without having to travel far. There are also ample long-term and short-term parking options and well-marked drop-off and pickup zones for those taking cabs and rideshare vehicles to and from the port. Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
It’s a 17-acre park right in the middle of the city and has been there since the Victorian age. Once you reach Lower Water Street, you can’t miss Alexander Keith’s Brewery. Located in a 200-year old ironstone brewery, Keith’s tours take guests back in time to explain the beer-making process that began here in 1820. Grape Escapes offers many different kinds of tours – half-day, full day, lunch included, private tours, etc. I went with a group of 8 friends on the Afternoon Escape from Halifax.
Or opt for one of the less pricey spots, where you can order some of the freshest fish and chips you've ever had. If you’re in Halifax on a Saturday, you can visit the oldest-running farmer’s market in North America, which is located on Lower Water Street. Pick up souvenirs from here including handmade sea glass jewelry, tins of maple syrup, local wines, and Nova Scotian knitwear. Peggy's Cove is a tiny, picture-postcard fishing village on St. Margaret’s Bay along the rugged Atlantic coast, a short drive from Halifax. Peggy’s Cove is especially known for its colorful fishing boats, quaint houses, and stately lighthouse, which dates back to 1915. This brilliant white icon with a red lantern room on top is perched on wave-lashed rocks.

Located on a rocky inlet on the Atlantic Ocean, Halifax—Nova Scotia’s provincial capital—is defined by its maritime geography. Halifax's picturesque waterfront is easy to explore on foot -- and close. Even if you're not in the mood to shop, stroll the boardwalk that zigzags along the harbor, lined with shops, restaurants and attractions. In 2023 the Port had scheduled a total of 191 cruise ship calls (of which handled 178, from 28 brand lines/companies) and estimated ~325,000 tourists (received ~301,000). There are plenty of upscale eateries along the downtown waterfront area serving full lobster dinners. Try the classic Nova Scotia seafood chowder, which brings together the best of the local seafood — mussels, haddock and scallops are commonly in the mix — in a creamy broth flavored with bacon.
Start off by Visiting Pier 21: The Canadian Museum of Immigration
This is a more casual spot in Downtown Halifax offering a locally sourced menu and an impressive cocktail selection. Just about a 15 minute stroll from the Harbour Walk, towards the center of town, you will come upon The Halifax Citadel. This site was the original fortress for colonists arriving from Great Britain in 1749. With its hilltop location providing the best vantage point, the community used the Citadel as a fortress to protect themselves against British troops. Enjoy some time in the vineyards learning about their harvesting strategies while taking advantage of all of the photo ops! They also have a great wine shop where you can purchase bottles and gifts.
History buffs won’t want to miss a visit to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. The museum covers everything from the region’s first shipbuilders and tragic shipwrecks to the city’s involvement in the World Wars, the Halifax explosion, and the sinking of the Titanic. Unfortunately, Halifax was also the site of one of the worst maritime disasters in history. In December of 1917, a French munitions ship collided with a Norwegian vessel in the harbor and the explosion resulted in the loss of over 2,000 lives and leveled much of the city’s northern end.
Take a left turn at Prince Street and continue a short distance to Lower Water Street to the Brewery Market. Here you can learn the process of beer making, and sample a few during the tour. The story goes that the Duke was obsessed with time and ordered the four clock faces to be built so that no one in his regiment had an excuse to be late. Head west a few blocks to the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, located high above George Street. Rebuilt in 1856 on the grounds of the original fortress from 1749, the Citadel played a major role in naval defense for the British Empire.
In January 2018, as containership port, Halifax reported a record year with containerized cargo shipping volume 559,242 TEU-containers, or 16% increase over 2016. Port's total cargo tonnage in 2017 was 5, million tons3 (or 12% increase over 2016). Cruise port's stats showed 173 ships (27% increase over 2016) and 292,722 passengers (23% increase). This blockchain system integrates seaports, containership terminals, shippers and forwarding agents. Retail therapy in Halifax includes both world-class shopping and carefully curated boutiques. Try the Historic Properties for sweaters, the Hydrostone Market for art or Bishop's Landing for jewelry and unique cosmetics.
The Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market is open daily during the summer months and is the longest continuously operated market in all of North America. Linked with disaster, another tragic accident was Swiss Air Flight 111, which crashed five miles off the coast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, on September 2, 1998. Alexander Keith’s brewery was founded in 1820 and ranks among the oldest working breweries in North America, dedicated to crafting small-batch brews, inspired by local Nova Scotian culture. This grave gained fame following the release of the 1997 film Titanic. I learned that it belonged to Joseph Dawson, an Irishman who worked in Titanic’s boiler room as a coal trimmer and not the popular character in the movie.
A popular port of call on Canada and New England cruises, ships dock at piers 20 and 22 near the downtown area — providing passengers convenient ship-to-shore access. The distance from Halifax cruise port to Peggy’s Cove is about 45 km/28 miles and it takes 50 minutes drive to get there. The best option to visit it is to book a guided shore excursion, especially if the ship has limited time in port. Travelers say Halifax is best seen on foot, so forget about the car and start walking! Most guided tours will be with a medium-sized group on a tour bus.
So, before you zip up your suitcase and bid farewell to your checked bag, let’s explore what items must remain out of sight during your journey. Couples can embrace the romance of the region by participating in a Polynesian blessing ceremony. Paul Gauguin gives its guests special access to a secluded beach on Bora Bora and a private island off the coast of Taha'a, where you can indulge in water sports, a gourmet barbecue and bar service. Oceania Cruises
Silversea Cruises topped the list as Best Luxury Cruise Line for the second year in a row. Cruise Critic just announced its annual list of the Best Cruise Lines of The Year. This is the 15th iteration of the list compiled by the online cruise community’s international team of cruise experts. Cabins may not have an overtly opulent feel, but they have all the right touches, including balconies in every room, quiet-closing drawers, heated bathroom floors and plentiful USB ports and outlets. After a long day of Zodiac, submersible or helicopter rides (yes, all these high-tech exploration toys are on board), you can retreat to your well-appointed suite, with distinct sleeping and living areas, plus a balcony. The ship is immersed in all things Polynesian, with a troupe of local performers on board to entertain guests with local song, dance and craft lessons.
The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff. Windstar Cruises' luxury small ships call on 150 ports throughout Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, and there's no way you'll go hungry on the journey.
The 9 best luxury cruise lines for elegance and exclusivity
You'll never find a cheap luxury cruise, but you can find sailings that are less expensive than others (either when sorting by the total cost or the per-night rate). You might have to compromise on sail dates or take a risk with the weather, but you can get great value by choosing the cruise less traveled. There's also a cool Arts Cafe, where coffee- and tea-drinkers can feed their habit while noshing healthy bites amid funky art. Foodies might also wish to pay a visit to the well-equipped Culinary Center onboard Oceania Riviera (as well as on twin sister ship Oceania Marina). It's a self-contained cooking school at sea that offers hands-on experience at 12 individual cooking stations (two people per station). Classes focusing on a variety of topics do incur an extra fee, but get rave reviews from past participants. Like the ocean ships, they feature Scandinavian design, a glass-walled Explorers' Lounge and signature Viking restaurants Manfredi's and Mamsen's (offering Norwegian specialties). That's the approach upscale cruise line Oceania Cruises takes with its fleet of seven 648- to 1,238-passenger ships (the last of which, Oceania Vista, just debuted in May 2023 and is its most elegant yet).
Dining aboard Oceania is a gastronomic adventure, with multiple venues showcasing exquisite dishes from skilled chefs. If you’re someone who doesn’t settle for anything less than first class, your ship’s come in — the award-winning Oasis®, Allure®, Harmony® and Symphony of the Seas® are in a class of their own. Filled with incredible upscale dining, critically acclaimed entertainment, and some of the most revolutionary suites at sea, each Oasis Class ship serves up endless ways to elevate every aspect of your getaway.
With ultra-luxury ocean cruises to the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and Alaska, Seabourn Cruise Line provides travelers with a one-of-a-kind experience. The cruise line considers the preferences of guests, providing customized, hand-selected itineraries. A few of the amenities you can enjoy when traveling with Seabourn Cruise Line include intimate ships with a yacht-like atmosphere, ocean-front suites, complimentary caviar, and extraordinary entertainment experiences.
An abundance of cashPacking an abundance of cash in your checked baggage is ill-advised for several reasons, particularly concerning security and potential legal complications. While no specific TSA regulations limit the amount of cash you can carry domestically, travelers entering the U.S. must declare amounts exceeding $10,000 to customs officials. However, regardless of the amount, carrying a significant sum of cash can attract attention from TSA agents, who have the authority to question you about the source and purpose of the money.
So, prepare to set sail on a voyage of grandeur and discover the unparalleled oceanic escapes awaiting you. The first ocean cruising vessel for Australian company Scenic, Scenic Eclipse offers the experience of a luxury yacht as opposed to an oversized cruise ship. It’s a ship with super luxury features like two helicopters and a submarine on board, plus eight restaurants and modern suites. For small ships, Scenic's yachts still manage to offer five gourmet dining venues, plus additional private dining options (such as a chef's table or teppanyaki grill), room service and culinary masterclasses in a show kitchen. Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands.
Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens." Since 2015, Viking Ocean Cruises has earned acclaim for its inclusive luxury ships and engaging, destination-focused itineraries. Viking Ocean Cruises appeal to active and intellectual adults who are interested in learning about the history and culture of the destinations they visit.
Hawaii and Alaska in one trip is an unusual pairing, but a reality on the Norwegian Spirit. The ship is quite the international traveler, sailing from departure ports such as Seward, Honolulu, Oahu, and Vancouver, British Columbia. Sailing mainly out of Vancouver, British Columbia, this ship provides 16 different itineraries ranging from 7-14 days.
Dining
For travelers seeking the most up-to-date amenities and features, the Norwegian Encore may be the preferred choice. It’s recent construction means that it incorporates the latest advancements in cruise ship technology and design. After all this gaming, we had worked up an appetite, so we headed to lunch at the American Diner. This venue is an up-charge, where you can either pay a la carte or use a specialty dining credit. Unfortunately though, this was the worst meal we had all week and not worth an up-charge in our opinion.
Do Any Alaskan Cruises See the Northern Lights?
It’s also worth noting that a passport may be necessary for an Alaska cruise depending on your citizenship and itinerary, so it’s advisable to check this in advance. Pay airfare for one guest, and you'll automatically lock-in roundtrip flights for two. Secure these savings online by choosing your nearest airport in step one of your cruise booking, and enjoy air-to-sea made easy. We'll coordinate your roundtrip flights, and transportation between the airport and cruise port. It featured a somewhat larger shower with a glass door and plenty of counter space and shelves for storage.
Norwegian Cruise Tips
There are actually a handful of different sports to try out on the Norwegian Jewel. There is a large court located on Deck 13 where guests can play basketball, soccer, volleyball, etc. Or on deck 12 there is a large shuffleboard game, large-size bowling, and a golf net.
Depending on which type of stateroom you’re staying in, you can make specialty dining and entertainment reservations 90 – 130 days in advance. Do note that the Norwegian Encore also hosts a 13-day “cruisetour” (land and cruise combo) that includes 6 land tours, and 5 ports of call if that is of interest to you. And on the Norwegian Sun, that journey is packed with amenities and dining options that cater to every taste and preference. But Sitka isn’t just about history; it’s a food lover’s paradise.
Still, our meal was great, and better than we remember the MDR food being on NCL. My bang-bang chicken and shrimp had plenty of kick, and the chocolate lava cake made for the perfect ending to a long day of sightseeing. When it comes to casual dining options, the Norwegian Encore cruise ship offers a few choices. The main pool is family-friendly and conveniently located near the small Aqua Park on the port side. For us, one of the most important aspects of any cruise ship is the availability, layout, and overall vibe of the outdoor decks. Luckily, the Norwegian Encore cruise ship boasts several outdoor spaces.

The Aleutian Island city of Unalaska is also on some boutique cruise line itineraries, so check carefully that the region that sparks your interest. Our most picturesque tour of Denali and the Alaska wilderness featuring rarely seen vistas, spectacular mountain passes and glaciers galore. This tour offers abundant marine wildlife viewing opportunities during the day boat cruise across Prince William Sound. Lastly, keeping an eye out for last-minute cruise deals can be a successful strategy for finding a budget-friendly option.
During our Alaska cruise, the go-karts were open various times depending on the port of call. With the fjord views behind us, Heidi and I donned our helmets in a race to the finish line. Let’s just say Heidi tried to blame her loss on the unskilled tween driver in front of her. Additionally, the main pool deck area has tall glass windows stretching nearly 10 feet tall, which isn’t ideal for snapping that legendary Alaska photo. The spa offers a wide variety of different treatments for an additional charge. If you enjoy pampering yourself on vacation, this could be exactly what you need.
Q is also home to one of our favorite cocktails, the “Smoked Peach Margarita” on tap. Not to mention, you need to save room for the “Mason Jar Banana Pudding”. Many cruisers will receive a 2-meal specialty dining package on a week-long cruise as part of the line’s Free at Sea promotion.
And there are plenty of shops with souvenirs and a nauseating amount of jewelry stores at each stop. But if shopping is your thing, you will find plenty of stores to check out. So while summer offers your best chance for better weather, you should still expect some rainfall and cloudy conditions. When the cruise commences, the Norwegian Cruise Line will charge the final bill to the card or debit card you have on file.
